From Toyoda to Toyota

As vehicle sales moved into full swing, the company held a public competition to select a new emblem to create an image for the company vehicles that would also drive sales. In October 1936, a new logo was selected with the new spelling of "Toyota." This was for several reasons: for a cleaner look and sharper sound, to move away from using a personal name to signify Toyota's existence as a corporate enterprise, and because the number of strokes needed to write the new name was eight, which is thought to be auspicious.
