Program for 5th graders: The automobile-manufacturing industry

The Toyota Commemorative Museum for Industry and Technology has developed an experiential learning support program targeting 5th graders. This program will add depth to their understanding by experiencing the studied content at 5th grade and promoting active learning in students.

The Structure of the Learning Materials

The Relation between the Toyota Commemorative Museum for Industry and Technology and Textbooks

The program matches with the following textbook contents.

The Automobile-manufacturing Industry: The Workflow of Automobile Production; Various Measures Used in Automobile Factories; and, The Automobile Industry in the Future

The Toyota Commemorative Museum for Industry and Technology Curriculum

The learning materials are expected to be delivered in six hours and are customizable by breaking necessary parts into the 10 – 13 hours alotted for the automobile-manufacturing industry.

Example 1: As introductory material for the course, lead with units that deal with automobiles to draw interest. (from the 2nd to the 7th unit)

Example 2: As an experiential confirmation of comprehension of what is learned in the textbooks. (from the 5th to the 10th unit)

Example 3: For the advanced learning to deepen the understanding of what is learned through the textbooks. (from the 10th to 13th unit)

The Four Merits of Experiential Learning at the Toyota Commemorative Museum for Industry and Technology

  • 1. A Comprehensive Exhibition

The important points in the exhibition are easy to show and see because automobile factories then and now, technological research-related exhibits, and the successive generations of the Toyota automobiles are displayed in one location.

    A Comprehensive Exhibition

  • 2. A Comparative Exhibition

Children can identify the measures employed in the current factories by comparing between the technologies in the past and at present because the transitions in production technologies in the factories are presented.

    A Comparative Exhibition

  • 3. Staff Who are Ready to Answer Your Questions

The in-house staff who have worked in factories will answer children’s questions from the current viewpoints. Children’s learning will deepen by asking questions as the staff explains the contents that children cannot grasp only from seeing the exhibits.

Staff Who are Ready to Answer Your Questions

  • 4. Can Carefully Observe the Movements of Machines Up Close

You can see the processes focused on welding and coating that cannot be observed in real-life factories. You can carefully observe the machine demonstrations while sensing the compelling power of machinery.
